HP launches ‘cloud’ printers

HP yesterday announced the availability of a revolutionary new line-up of web connected ,cloud enabled printers that offer a combination of personalized apps and ePrint technology that allows for easy customizable printing from anywhere, anytime.

These printers provide customers with the f reedom and convenience to prin t from any mobile device using HP’s ePrint technology Leveraging the cloud, HP’s ePrint enables businesses and consumers to manage content and print quickly and securely by emailing their desired files -such as emails, documents and images - directly to any ePrint enabled HP printer with an Internet connection; eliminating the need to install drivers.

With just an email address, ePrint will work from any mobile device, including smart phones, laptops and even the iPad.

The new line-up includes a broad portfolio of ePrint enabled printers that spans across Officejet, Photosmart, LaserJet and Designjet categories.

“If you can email it, you can now print it,” said Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific Ltd Consumer and IWS South East Asia, Imaging and Printing Group Director P.V. Viswanath, “This opens up a new world of possibilities for businesses,” he said.

An industry first, HP enabled two-way print through the cloud using HP Print Apps, creating an unparalleled web experience for customers to access, manage and share content from templates and stored documents.

All this without a Pc, using HP print applications. The applications available in Asia include Google Docs, box.net and Biztree.

“HP is once again revolutionizing printing, this time combining anywhere, anytime printing with touch-screen technology and personalized content,” said Hewlett-Packard Sales (Pte) Ltd Asian Emerging Countries Imaging and Printing Group, General manager Irving Oh.

To enhance the value of the printer to consumers HP is also introducing a range of new apps, which will join a host of partners from the world of entertainment including Disney, Web, Sudoko, Quick Forms, DreamWorks, and Tabbloid.

New apps from Yahoo, Crayola and Picasa are also available for download online. Customers can send documents to print through an HP ePrint mobile app on their smart phone device to a home, office or public print location.

Customers will be able to send Microsoft Office documents, Adobe PDFs and JPEG image files among others.

With the explosion of web-connected devices like smart phones, netbooks and iDevices, HP recognizes the increased need for intuitive solutions that make conducting business easier.

“The HP ePrint launch will further enhance HP’s presence in the Sri Lankan Market, as users will benefit from HP’s latest technology,” said Country Manager Sri Lanka and Maldives HP Imaging and Printing Group, Shamal De Silva.


SLIIT wins accolades

SLIIT was awarded two Certificates of Appreciation for two of its projects under “e-inclusion” (CSR Project of SLIIT) and “Enterprise and Livelihood” (Student Project-”Cyber Mate’”) categories at the e-Swabhimani Awards 2010 held recently at the Cinnamon Grand hotel, Colombo witch was organized by ICTA Sri Lanka.

A company which is incubating from the SLIIT Concept Nursery, Cheerurteam.com Pvt Ltd also managed to bag the award for Best e-Content Application under e-News category at the e-Swabhimani awards 2010. SLIIT ConceptNursery assists and promotes IT enterprises, innovators and IT start-up companies by providing access to business and technical expertise, financial resources, international industry contacts, communication facilities, training in IT, business advice and business plan development and marketing.


Novell being sold

US enterprise software maker Novell announced Monday that it had agreed to be acquired for 2.2 billion dollars by Attachmate, an investment group made up of three private equity firms.

The deal calls for Attachmate, which is owned by Francisco Partners, Golden Gate Capital and Thoma Bravo, to buy Novell for 6.10 dollars per share in cash, a nine percent premium over Friday’s closing price in New York.

Novell provides identity and security, systems management and collaboration solutions for Linux-based operating platforms.
