Record crowds visit tunnel

Over 500,000 people have visited the Upper Kotmale hydro power plant tunnel until Sunday evening. The tunnel was opened to the public for the second time from November 17 to 21.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa inaugurated this tunnel on November 4. It was kept open to the public from November 5 to 7. A record 200,000 people visited the tunnel during that period.

The tunnel will be again open for schoolchildren in December. Others will not be allowed to visit the site together with the students. The construction of the underground power plant will also be open for public viewing in December, Power and Energy Ministry sources said.
