Bomb rocks Philippines

PHILIPPINES: A bomb explosion rocked a restive town in southern Philippines on Sunday morning, police said.

The blast from an improvised explosive device happened at 6:30 a.m. in Poblacion village of Shariff Aguak town in Mindanao’s Maguindanao province, said the regional police chief, Chief Superintendent Bienvinido Latag.

Latag said the explosion which occurred near a public elementary school damaged a store but did not cause injuries.

The incident happened two days before the first anniversary of the Maguindanao massacre, a political mass killing allegedly carried out by a powerful political clan in the province against its rival in May’s elections.
