Taps run dry in housing scheme

Twenty three families evicted from Suduhumpola due to landslide
threats and resettled in a housing scheme in Maragashandiya, Bowalawatta,
Kandy in 2006 are suffering without proper water supply facilities.
Residents say their housing scheme was provided with a pipeborne
water supply facility on the eve of the 2010 general elections after
charging Rs 23,000 from each chief occupant of the houses.
The maintenance of the water scheme built by a company called Howard
under a Denmark aid scheme was handed over to the Water Supply and
Drainage Board.
They allege that the pipes have run dry after they received water for
about three hours after the opening ceremony.
Although they have no water supplies, Water Board meter readers visit
their houses regularly and check the meters as if they are consuming
water.
They now fear whether they will receive an inflated water bill in due
cause despite not having any water supply on their taps.
NWS&DB officials when contacted say that a pressure problem in the
overhead water tower had caused the disruption of the water supply. |
