Rain curtails play in Galle Test
Chris DHAMBARAGE reporting from Galle
Skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena hammered contrasting
half centuries before heavy rain brought an end to the proceedings early
with Sri Lanka on 165 for 3 in the opening Test match against the West
Indies at the Galle International Stadium yesterday.
Left hander Sangakkara raced to a sparkling half century from just 45
deliveries inclusive of nine boundaries and went on to make a top score
of 73 before he was bowled by Dwayne Bravo.
Sangakkara also put on a fifty run partnership for the third wicket
with former captain Mahela Jayawardena who played a more responsible
innings to be unbeaten on 51 from 91 deliveries inclusive of five
boundaries.
Thilan Samaraweera joined Jayawardena and the pair had so far put on
33 runs for the fourth wicket when bad light halted play shortly after
lunch which was followed by a heavy shower that lasted throughout the
second session. The match was eventually called off at 3.45 p.m. and
will resume today at 9.45 a.m. with Sri Lanka still needing a further
215 runs to avert the follow on mark with seven wickets in hand.
