Handloom zones planned

Measures have been taken to expand the handloom industry by establishing separate handloom production zones, said Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiyutheen.

He was addressing TexIndia 2010 Buyer-Seller Meet at Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo yesterday. Handloom production zones will be set up in every Province next year.

The Government has taken steps to develop the handloom sector in the Northern and Eastern Provinces targeting Internally Displaced Persons, he said.

The Minister further stated that India is a giant in this industry and ready to give their support to Sri Lanka. The project will be launched with the assistance of the Economic Development Ministry.

Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) Chairman Chhajar, FCCISL President Kosala Wickramanayaka and several PDEXCIL members were also present.
