Stranded fisherman to arrive today
K D Mahesh Pathmakumara the fisherman who was the only survivor
rescued by the Maldivian Coast Guard when their mutli-day boat
Dinusha-02 got stranded in sea after setting out from the Beruwala
harbour on March 19 will arrive in the island today or tomorrow. The
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry said on the
instructions of Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne.
They have sent Rs 25,000 to cover his airfare. Minister Senaratne has
also requested the Maldivian government to tow the stranded multi-day
boat to a place near Male to facilitate repairs to it.
'Govt still paying wheat flour loan'

The Government is still paying the loan taken about 60 years ago for
wheat flour, said Economic Development Deputy Minister Ranjith
Siyambalapitiya. He was speaking at a meeting organized by the Kegalle
district agrarian services to educate farmer society members before
commencing projects to reconstruct irrigation work in the Kegalle
district.
The Economic Development Ministry had provided Rs 30 million for
development projects, Siyambalapitiya said.
Funds to establish Muslim College
The government will allocate funds from the next budget, to establish
a Muslim College with all facilities in Hantana, Kandy, Higher Education
Minster S B Dissanayake said addressing a prize giving at Delanga As-Siraj
Muslim Vidyalaya. The Minister said. 25 acres will be used to establish
the college. The Minister also said the Udu Nuwara Muslim college will
be renovated.The Minister said during a meeting with Kuwaiti officials
next week, he hopes to request for funds not only for higher education
but also to develop Muslim schools in the country. DDA
Death of Irene Nanayakkara
Mrs Irene Elizabeth Nanayakkara nee Dissanayaka, mother of
Parliamentarian Vasudeva Nanayakkara, former Minister Hemakumara
Nanayakkara and Film Director Yasapalitha Nanayakkara, passed away.
Cremation on Thursday, October 28 at 5 p.m. at the General Cemetery,
Borella. Cortege will leave No 4, Sarasavi Gardens, Nawala Road,
Nugegoda at 4 p.m. No flowers please.
Indonesian tsunami kills 108, 500 missing
At least 108 people were killed and more than 500 missing Tuesday,
including a group of Australian surfers, after a tsunami triggered by a
powerful earthquake hit a remote Indonesian island chain, destroying
villages in its path. The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck in the
Mentawai Islands area west of Sumatra late Monday, generating waves as
high as three metres (10 feet) that swept away 10 villages, officials
said.
Residents reported shaking as far away as the West Sumatran

Suspect held

Kegalle Police arrested a suspect with gold Jewelery worth Rs 106,500
alleged to have been burgled from a house in the Kegalle Hiriwadunna
area on a tip off. Police said two gold chains, two pendents two bangles
and two pairs of ear rings were in his possession.
The suspect, an army deserter, was posing as a King coconut and
arecanet collector. Kegalle Magistrate viraj Ranatunge remanded the
suspect.
New Acts to protect Sasana

The Government will bring five new Acts to Parliament including
registration of Bhikkus, Vihara and Devalaya and ecclesiastical code on
Sasana to protect the Buddha Sasana, Prime Minister D M Jayaratne said
at Kantalay Agrabodhi Viharaya yesterday to launch the inaugural
National program to develop religious centers of all faiths in the
Trincomalee District.
Katina Pinkama
The annual Katina Pinkama of the Asokaramaya, Thimbirigasyaya will be
held on Sunday, November 7. This will be preceded by a series of Dhamma
Desana daily at 7pm from November 1 to 5 and an all night pirit ceremony
on November 6. The offering of the Katina Cheevaraya will take place on
November 7 at 6am. This will be followed by a heel daana at 7am. The
program will conclude with the katinanisansa Dhamma Desana at 7pm on
November 7.
Public talk
A public talk in English on 'Saddha the first step' will be delivered
by Samudra de Zoysa at the Servants of the Buddha Society meeting on
October 30 at 4.30pm at the Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.

Anniversary celebrations
The National Photographic Art Society will conduct a series of events
to mark its 60th anniversary on November 5, 6 and 7 at the Colombo
Exhibition and Conference Centre. A book titled Prabalochana Sanhitha
comprising of letters pertaining to photographic art, cinema, television
and electronic visual communication will be launched at the function.
Awards ceremony
The awards ceremony of the HelpAge Sri Lanka All Island Schools short
story writing competition in English will be held on November 2 at
Gothami Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo 10 from 10 am to 11.30 am.

A workshop on practical disaster preparedness and mitigation measures

Three with heroin remanded
Kapila Somaratne- Panadura group corr.
Three suspects engaged in heroin trafficking were remanded by Kesbewa
Magistrate Iyesha Jayasena. The suspects on a motor bicycle were
arrested at Piliyandala by Boralesgamuwa Police after 2,000 milligrams
of heroin were seized.
One suspect was identified as a person who had served a jail term.
Five injured in car crash

A businessman and four others were seriously injured when a
16-year-old driving a car along Horana road collided with the
businessman's car. The accident occurred on the Horana road, Eluwila
last week. The businessman and another who were critically injured were
rushed to the National Hospital. The youth did not have a driving
licence. He was taken to custody by Panadura Police Traffic Branch. Two
others injured were admitted to the Panadura Hospital.
Man held for dog theft

A three-wheeler driver who had allegedly robbed a pet dog valued at
Rs 4,500 from a house was taken into custody by Galewela police.
According to the police, the three-wheeler driver had stolen the dog
while the inmates were away. Dambulla acting Magistrate Rathnasena
Ranasinghe released the man on Rs 50,000 personal bail.
