Tribute: Professor M T M Jiffry:

Expert on Distance Education

It is with deep regret the University Grants Commission announce the demise of Professor M T M Jiffry its beloved Vice-Chairman on September 17, 2010 after a brief illness. Professor Jiffry was appointed as a Member of the University Grants Commission in March 2006 by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and subsequently appointed as the Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission in 2007.

Professor Jiffry was born in Matara educated at St Thomas’ College, Matara, Mahinda College in Galle and entered Ananda College in Colombo before entering Dental Sciences Faculty of Peradeniya University in 1969.

A dental surgeon by profession Prof Jiffry joined the Medical Sciences Faculty Sri Jayewardenepura University and rose to be appointed as Professor of Physiology and also became the founder of Medical Sciences Faculty Dean, Sri Jayewardenepura University. He was one of Sri Lanka’s foremost experts on Distance Education and was responsible for the development of External Degree Interim Board of the University Grants Commission. He was the Chairman of many Standing Committees of the University Grants Commission and was the Chairman of the Management Committee and the Transfer Board.

In addition to his portfolio at the University Grants Commission, Professor Jiffry was a Member of the Finance Commission, a Member of Board of Management of National Science Foundation (NSF), consultant to the Ministry of Science and Technology and to the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education and was appointed as a Member of Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission by President Mahinda Rajapaksa recently.

The University Grants Commission deeply appreciates the role played by Professor Jiffry as a Member and the Vice-Chairman from 2006 to execute the mandate given under the Universities Act of 1978.

He leaves his wife Fowzul Nisa and we pray that he rest in peace (Janathal Firdox)
