Excessive Internet use triggers:
Depression in adolescents
Too much of anything will bring on repercussions; it is quite true
with Internet use. Depression in teens could be triggered by too much
Internet use, according to a recent study. Depression in teenagers could
be more likely caused by pathological Internet use, hints a recent study
published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Depression is a common symptom
affecting our youth

The study followed 1,000 high school students from Guangzhou in
southern China and discovered, through self-reported questionnaires that
asked about the teenagers? mental statuses and Internet usage, that
those with ?unhealthy? Internet use were more than twice as likely to
develop depression symptoms.
?Results suggested that young people who are initially free of mental
health problems but use the Internet could develop depression as a
consequence,? wrote co-authors of the report Lawrence T. Lam, of the
University of Notre Dame Australia, and Zi-Wen Peng, from the Ministry
of Education and SunYat-Sen University in Guangzhou, China.
?These results have direct implications for the prevention of mental
illness in young people, particularly in developing countries,? they
added.
Whatever the research studies report the youth cannot be separated
from the Internet and its usage. It has become their medium of
communication and their mode of getting in touch. The youth today are
addicted to it. Whether they use the computer or mobile phone or do
their project reports or work in office the Internet takes centre stage
in their lives. Whether the youth understand the word moderation, is yet
to be researched upon. Today's young generation seem to go the full
length, to extremes, be it consuming food, playing games, chatting
friends, or simply connecting friends through Internet. The Internet:
Its their life. Its their lifestyle. There is so much they learn from
it. There is so much to gain. Internet can be a profitable means but one
need to prevent excessive indulgence to avoid mental strain and
depression.
