Revival.
Colourful pencil cases |
Spearheaded by Senaka De Silva the Dumbara weavers of Menikhinna were
given a workshop on colour, texture and design. These traditional
craftsmen will be able to apply their skills to turn out crafts for the
contemporary interior design markets in Sri Lanka and abroad. De Silva
had also introduced new designs and motifs to enhance their designs.

Dumbara weaving has been an age old method of weaving decorative mats
using the fiber from the leaf of the Niyanda plant. The leaf is scraped
off with a wooden stick to extract the fiber, washed and dyed into
colours and woven on the loom fitted to the ground. Though this craft
had been handed down from our ancestors only 10 families engage in the
profession in Menikhinna today.
The exhibition will be opened by World Craft Council President Usha
Krishna. It will be held from October 19 to November 20 from 10am to
8pm. |
