World Sight Day tomorrow
Lions Club of Sri Lanka has made arrangements to carry out eye
screening camps and cataract surgeries free-of-charge.
Lions District 306 AI will carry out several cataract surgeries at
the Gift of Sight Hospital, Galabada Vihara premises, Panadura. There
will be an eye screening program as well as eye related services such as
Glaucoma treatment, Diabetic retinopathy treatment and Diabetic testing.
The Loins Gift of Sight Hospital at Panadura has so far carried out
more than 11,000 contact surgeries, and this year plans to conduct 5,000
surgeries.
All persons visiting the Hospital on the World Sight Day will be
provided a mid-day meal, said District Governor Sunil Dharmaratne
Dist-306 AI.
Children's Day program
Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC has made arrangements to conduct the
Universal Children's day program with the participation of 300 children
throughout the country including the North and East under the patronage
of Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC National Director Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney
at Colombo International School, Colombo 7 on October 3 from 9.30 am
onwards.
Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena will be the chief guest and
Resident Representative of UN Neil Buhne will be the special guest along
with Minister of The Indian High Commission Mrs Prahamurti.
The key note address will be delivered by Auxiliary Bishop of the
Colombo Archdiocese Rt. Rev. Dr. Marius Peiris and the program includes
various cultural events representing all religious and ethnic groups,
awarding certificates to the winners of various competitions which has
been conducted throughout the island by the Caritas Network to mark the
Universal Day.
Legal action against nine hotels in Kurunegala

The Kurunegala Division Environmental Police Unit will take legal
action against nine eateries in Kurunegala town for selling unhygienic
food and beverages.
The Police took this initiative after raiding 100 eating houses in
the Kurunegala town area on Thursday. Police Spokesman SP Prishantha
Jayakody told the Daily News that the Police warned owners of 58 hotels
to take corrective measures to provide better food for the consumers.
This is the first phase of an operation to raid all eating houses in
Kurunegala.
Thief in Police uniform
Kandy Headquarters Police have instituted an investigation against a
Police Inspector who is alleged to have stolen mobile phones from young
couples who come to Kandy by intimidating them.
Police have already found information about four phones stolen in
this manner. Kandy Province Senior DIG Gamini Navarathna and DIG Pujith
Jayasundara have instructed the Kandy Headquarters Police to arrest the
suspect Police Inspector.
AATSL Annual Conference
The Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AATSL) holds
it annual conference 2010 at the Hotel Galadari October 7 and 8 on the
theme “Maximizing tomorrow’s opportunities”.
Prof. W D Lakshman, Chairman - Presidential Commission on Taxation
will deliver the Keynote address at the Ceremonial Inauguration October
7.
The Foreign Resource person who will be a major inducement at the
2010 Conference is Katsuhiko Satoh, Special Advisor to Ford Japan
Limited and President of the Dannya Association of Japan, a widely
travelled personality who will be providing his first hand experience in
the Growth of the Asian Economy.
New Free Trade Zone
The Government will form a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Matale on a
request of Matale district Parliamentarian Luxman Wasantha Perera. One
hundred acres will be allocated for this.
Youth knocked down
Indika Polkotuwa
A 28-year youth died on the spot after being knocked down by a
motorcyclist at Imasuyaya, Wilgamuwa on Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Meegahagedara Wijeratne of Imasuyaya.
The motorcyclist too was critically injured and admitted to the Kandy
Hospital. Wilgamuwa Police are investigating.
SLIIT branch in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) will open its
fifth branch in the Jaffna peninsula by November this year Chancellor
Prof. Sam Karunaratne told the Daily News.
The SLIIT already has opened branches in Colombo, Malambe, Kandy and
Matara.
SLIIT was established in 1999 to educate and train IT professionals
and produce over 1,000 IT professionals annually.
Sri Sumangala Walk
A walk organized by Sri Sumangala Girls School, Panadura to mark 86
years will be held on October 3. Funds from this walk will be used for
the school's development activities.
Kites Festival postponed
The National Festival of Kites due to be held at the Galle Face Green
on Sunday October 3, 2010 has been postponed to October 10,2010 due to
inclement weather conditions.
Bible Study
The Ceylon Bible Society is organizing a written, general Biblical
knowledge program, which is known as "Creative Bible Study", and there
is no syllabus.
The first and second stages were held at the relevant Sunday schools
in August and September respectively. The finals will be held at the
Trinity College Hall, Kandy at 10 AM on October 2.
UNICEF to rehabilitate 13 schools

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) undertakes to rehabilitate 13
schools destroyed due to the war in Batticaloa District.
These schools are located in Kokkadicholai, Vavunathive, Vellaveli,
Wakarai and Karadiyanaru areas.
Police exam
The written examination for recruitment of probationary
Sub-Inspectors of Police will be held on October 16 from 9-11 am at the
Asoka Vidyalaya, Maradana, Colombo 10. Admission cards have already been
posted to the applicants, said Police Media Spokesman SP Prishantha
Jayakody.
Those who have not yet received the admission cards should contact
the Police Examinations Branch 011-2430362.
A newly constructed house was donated to the wife of war
hero Corporal H G N D Fernando who made the supreme
sacrifice for the motherland. The house warming ceremony was
held with the attendance of Chief of Defence staff Air Force
Commander and Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilake and the
Chairperson of the SLAF Seva Vanitha Unit Nelun Gunatileke
at Naula. The construction of this house was carried out
under the supervision of the Commanding Officer of the Sri
Lanka Air Force Station Sigiriya, Wing Commander Chamindra

Five new lorries and a bus were added to the ANCL fleet at a
cost of over Rs 30 million to distribute Lake House
publications to the readers efficiently. ANCL Chairman
Bandula Padmakumara handed over the keys of the vehicles to
the respective drivers at the Transport Department on
