Germany on brink of whitewash
Germany are on the brink of whitewashing South Africa in their Davis
Cup World Group play-off tie after Andreas Beck’s win over Izak der
Merwe in the singles on Sunday gave the hosts a 4-0 lead.
The 24-year-old Beck wasted no time as he inflicted a 7-5, 6-2 win
over the South African and now only Rik de Voest can stop Germany
winning the tie 5-0 if he can beat Florian Mayer in Sunday’s final
singles match. On Saturday, Germany took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the
play-off after de Voest and Wesley Moodie were beaten in the doubles
6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Beck and Christoph Kas in two hours and 20
minutes.
