Book launch
The maiden short story book Notherena Pema written by Sakunthala
Jayawardene working in the Government’s Information Department will be
launched at the Department Auditorium on September 21 at 1.00 p.m.
It will be held under the patronage of Mass Media and Information
Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena,
Western Province Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga and Economic
Development Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardene.
Indigenous people’s day
A program to mark World Indigenous People’s day will be held at the
Mahiyangana Dambana Indigenous People’s Social Heritage Centre on
September 25 from 9.00 a.m.
The program is organized by the President’s Public Relation Division
in collaboration with the National Heritage and Cultural Affairs
Ministry, the Uva provincial Council and with the participation of 30
Ministries, a press release issued by the Presidential Secretariat said.
A special healthcare clinic and Exhibition stalls for the benefit of
the indigenous people will be held. A cultural program reflecting
indigenous people’s cultural will also be displayed.
Wins research gold medal
Sri Lankan born scientist Dr. Chris H Senanayake has won the
Siegfried Gold Medal for 2010. The Medal was established in 2004 by
Siegfried AG to recognize excellence in the field of chemical process
development. Dr. Senanayake has been selected for this year's award on
account of his innovative contributions toward efficient processes for
the production of pharmaceutical ingredients.
Currently he holds the position of Vice President for Chemical
Development at Boehringer-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Senanayake
received his PhD from Wayne State University in 1987.
Million houses on way
The government will implement a Million Houses program and a
settlement Development program following the Budget for the Year 2011,
said Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities
Miniser Wimal Weerawansa at a meeting held at the National Housing
Development Authority (NHDA) Friday.
In future housing schemes will be implemented to cater to the needs
of all income groups, including low income earners, said a press release
issued by the NHDA.
The Minister also gave permanent appointment letters to 60 employees
who were earlier recruited as recovery agents of the NHDA on a casual
basis.
S highway authority building opening
The four storeyed Southern High Way Authority administrative building
constructed at a cost of Rs. 112 million will be opened by Economic
Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa on September 20 evening. With the
commissioning of the building an annual cost of Rs. 1.98 million spent
for office accommodation could be saved.
Randoli perahera
The third Randoli perahera of the Mahiyangana Esala perahera will
parade the streets today starting at 9.31 p.m.
Samadhi Buddha statue painting
Painting of the Samadhi Buddha statue erected in the Mahiyangana city
will begin at the auspicious time of 9.28 a.m. today (20).
Uva Province Tourism Minister Anura Widanagamage, Badulla district
Parliamentarian Thenuka Widanagamage and Radalla Holdings Managing
Director Nihal Radalla will participate. Construction of the statue is
by courtesy of the Mahiyangana Traders Association.
Bandaranaike commemoration
The 51st commemoration of Premier S W R D Bandaranaike and to 10th
commemoration of Premier Sirimavo Bandaranaike will take place at the
Horagolla Samadhi on September 26.
Shocking fines on power pirates
Twenty five power pirates nabbed during a midnight raid in
Chavakachcheri by Ceylon Electricity Board and police personnel were
fined Rs 250,000.
Two killed in accident
Irangika Range
A private bus plying from Pitamaruwa in Passara skidded off the road
and went down a precipice between Passara and Badulla yesterday evening,
killing two people and injuring 12, Badulla Police said.
The incident has taken place at around 5.45pm yesterday. It is
revealed that two male passengers had died in the incident.
The injured have been admitted to the Badulla Hospital.
Investigations are continuing. |
