Pakistan flood crisis:
UN reiterates aid appeal
Pakistan: United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Antonio Guterres called on the international community Thursday to do
more to support Pakistan, devastated over the past month by the worst
flooding in history.
Guterres, who plans to meet with President Asif Ali Zardari and other
authorities, visited several sites in the northwestern region, one of
the hardest-hit by the flooding.
The UN will make another appeal to donors today to ask for more money
to assist victims, given that only 67 percent of the initial $459.7
million promised has been received. Islamabad established a supervisory
body Thursday to handle international aid.
Flooding caused by the monsoon seasonal rains covered one-fifth of
Pakistan and affecte 21 million people, 10 million of whom lost their
homes. Islamabad, Prensa Latina |
