‘Wrong’ perfume can lead to trouble

The National Pharmaceuticals Authority (NPA) will take legal action against traders in Pettah selling unregistered imported perfumes.

NPA officials checked over 100 centres selling perfume in Pettah yesterday and found many had violated laws in connection with the import of perfumes.

NPA Director Dr Hemantha Benaragama said unregistered perfumes can cause many health problems to inhalers.


Suspect nabbed with jewellery haul

A suspect wanted in connection with a series of robberies in Aniwatte, Kandy was arrested by police Thursday along with a stock of robbed gold jewellery valued at nearly Rs 800,000.

The jewellery had been sold to certain jewellery shops in Mawanella and Geli-oya.


Drunken drivers nabbed

Police arrested 19 persons driving under the influence of liquor in Katugastota Thursday night.

Investigations revealed that some had no valid driving licences.

Suspects are to be produced before Court.


WPC Budget on September 21

The Financial Statement for the year 2011 of the Western Province Provincial Council (WPC) is scheduled to be presented by WPC Chief Minister and Finance, Planning and Education Minister, Western Province, Prasanna Ranatunga September 21 at 9.30 am at the Council Chamber.

This is the second Financial Statute of the Fifth Provincial Council of the Western Province and the second Financial Statute presented by the Chief Minister subsequent to his assuming office.


Spectacles for needy students

The Education Ministry will provide free pairs of spectacles for needy students of the North Western Province. A recent survey conducted by the North Western Provincial Health Services Department has revealed about 5,400 school children in Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts are suffering from poor eyesight.

The North Western Provincial Education Ministry will hold 32 mobile eye clinics and 24 mobile dental clinics in remote schools. Rs 5.1 million has been allocated for this.


Death of Prof MTM Jiffry

University Grants Commission Vice Chairman Prof. MTM Jiffry expired at a private nursing home at the age of 62 last morning. He was also a senior Professor of Physiology at the Sri Jayawardenapura University. He had his education at St. Servatius College and St. Thomas College in Matara and Mahinda College, Galle. He completed his higher education from Ananda College, Colombo and was a classmate of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

He was recently appointed by the President to study and submit a report on the University system in the North and East. President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is abroad now has condoled the passing away. UPFA Parliamentarian AHM Azwer speaking to the Daily News also expressed his grievances.


Robber fined

A person who broke into a house and robbed Rs 8,500 cash with gold jewelleries valued Rs 5,400 fined Rs 30,000 by the Dambulla Magistrate. The Magistrate also ordered him to pay Rs 7,500 as compensation.

The accused was a resident at Vihara Junction, Dambulla.


Upadyaya receives credentials

Ven Dr Pannila Sri Ananda Chief Sanghanayake thera of Seethadi Sivu Korale and Viharadhipathi of nine viharayes here and abroad including the Attanagalla Raja Maha Viharaya, Houston Bauddha Viharaya Los Angeles Dharmavijaya Viharaya and Taiwan Theravada Buddhist Viharaya has been appointed as an Upadyaya of the Malwatte Viharaya in Kandy. He will receive his credential from the Most Ven Tibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Mahanayake Thera of the Malwatte Chapter at a ceremony of the Malwatte Viharaya in Kandy on today (18) at 3 pm.


Remembering C W W Kannangara

A six day Educational Exhibition and Fair organised by the Horana Taxila Central College to mark the 41st Dr C W W Kannangara commemoration will begin at the school premises on September 28. The opening ceremony on September 28 will be graced by Ministers Bandula Gunawardena, Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, S B Dissanayake, W D J Seneviratne and Patali Champika Ranawaka.


Skills evaluation

An islandwide program to evaluate students' skills in 39 realms including speech, Buddhist Arts, recital of verses, Dhamma Knowledge and Essays organized by the Buddhasasana and Religious Affairs Ministry will be held in 311 Sasanarakshaka Mandala on September 19 (Sunday) at 8.30 a.m.


Electricity customer service office at Colombo

The Power and Energy Ministry launched a customer service office called 'e-City' at Colombo 6, where customers will be able to get all electricity needs under one roof.

Power and Energy Minster Patali Champika Ranawaka introduced this concept to expand the electricity consumer network throughout the island. Monthly bill payments and details about power connections and interruptions will be available at 'e-City' office. SAB


Maid returns with burn injuries

A housemaid with burn injuries who returned to the country from Doha, Qatar has been admitted to Mundalam Hospital.

The victim is a resident of Madurankuliya, Puttalam. She had gone to Qatar last year.

A woman in the house where she was employed as a housemaid had thrown boiling water to her body over a minor incident, the housemaid said.

Mundalam Police are investigating.


Junior Inventor welcome ceremony

The welcome ceremony of the "Junior Inventor of the Year 2010" organized by the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) will be held today from 11.00 a.m. to 12 noon at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium, 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena will be the Chief Guest. IESL President-elect Prof A K W Jayawardena and INTEL ISEF 2010 Grand Award winner Ganidu Nanayakkara will address the ceremony.


Public lecture

A lecture on the Gospel of St Mark will be delivered by Very Rev Fr Nilendra Gunasekera, Professor in Sacred Scripture at the National Seminary, Ampitiya, September 20 at 6.00 p.m. at the Colombo YMCA Forum Hall.

The lectures are conducted at the invitation of the Colombo YMCA Bible Study Institute.


Northern fishermen benefit

A special loan scheme for northern fishermen has been launched on a concept of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne. Under this, fishermen are entitled to obtain Rs 100,000 for repairing their boats, purchasing fishing nets and other equipment. Rs 65 million has already been given to 650 fishermen under this scheme. Another loan scheme named Diyawara Saviya will be started next year for the wives of fishermen to start self employment. Two million Rupees will be allocated for the project.


Sell paddy to PMB- Deputy minister

Irrigation and water management deputy minister S M Chandrasena requests all farmers to sell their paddy to the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) without being victims of fraudulent buyers.

The deputy minister had a discussion with farmers while inspecting the paddy buying centres at Mahaweli H zone. He said the Government has allocated Rs 6,000 million to purchase paddy in the Yala season.

If necessary it could be increased, he said.


Business centres burgled

Five business centres at Meetiyagoda have been burgled by a group of thieves and robbed of more than Rs 350,000. According to the owners, thieves had cut down fitted hasp and staples without breaking padlocks by using oxygen and other gas lamps and entered through the main doors.


Fined for illegal mining

Three suspects arrested for illegal graphite mining at Kottalane estate, Nortonbridge by the Nortonbridge Police were fined Rs 50,000 cash bail each by Hatton Magistrate Shathun Vitharane.

Here the Premier paying floral tributes to the Minister’s statue at the Kobbekaduwa Research and Training Centre, Rajagiriya. Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena and Prof Tissa Vitharana, Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, Deputy Minister M K D S Gunawardena and Kobbekaduwa’s family members were also present.
