Seminar on Fa-Hsien Thera's visit
The Sri Lanka - China Friendship Association has made arrangements to
conduct a seminar on "Sri Lanka - China historical relationship
inaugurated by the visit of Venerable Fa-Hsien Thera on September 21 at
4.30 p.m. at the Mahaweli Centre to Commemorate the 1600 anniversary of
the famous Chinese monk's visit to Sri Lanka.
Fa-Hsien Thera came here during the regime of King Mahanama during
the Anuradhapura era, after a voyage of 14 Days in a large merchant
vessel from India.
The Most Ven Fa-Hsien's contribution in propagating Buddhism in China
has been the cornerstone in teaching Buddhism in China. Some scholars
specially gave detailed annotations and study on his Record of Buddhist
Kingdoms, some scholars cited it repeatedly in the writing of Theravada
Buddhist History, especially, in writings of the History of Buddhism in
Ceylon, the history of Buddhism, culture and history in South Asia etc.
The Ven Thera resided at Abhayagiri Viharaya for three years studying
Buddhism.
Historical and religious intellectual discussions will take place in
the light of Ven Fa-Hsien Thera's visit as the seminar, which will also
celebrate the 61st National Day of the People's Republic of China.
Most Ven Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Maha Nayake Thera, Chinese
Ambassador Madam Yang Xiuping, Ven Maduluwawe Sobhitha Nayake Thera and
Dr Praneeth Abeysundera will address the gathering.
