Origin and evolution of Sinhala newspaper publication
The scholastic publication titled Sinhala Puwathpath Prakasanaye
Aarambhaya saha Bikashanaya (The Origin and evolution of Sinhala
newspaper publication) authored by People’s Bank deputy general Manager
Dr Nihal Ranjith Jayathilake, and a freelance Journalist, will be
launched at the Sri Lanka National Library Services Board auditorium on
23 September at 4pm at Nidahas Mawatha, Colombo 07.
The book has been spawned conjoining the research thesis compiled by
Nihal Ranjith for his Ph.D.Degree awarded by the University of Sri
Jayawardenapura.
Dr Jayathilake stated that 77 main stream Sinhala newspapers from
Lanka Lokaya published in 1860 and considered as the first Sinhala
newspaper in the country and publications of Dinamina newspaper up to
the year 1916 (56 years), have been comprehensively scrutinized to
pragmatize the contents in an explicit manner.
He asserts that this book subsumes an investigatory study pertinent
to economic, social and religious background that impacted upon the
Sinhala newspaper publication and information relating to very early
English and Tamil newspapers originated before the origin of Sinlhala
newspapers.
A special feature of the book is the inclusion of the origin of
newspapers in the world and a number of historical information relating
to international trends which have not yet been hitherto included in any
Sinhala book.
Sri Jayawardenapura University Chancellor Ven. Professor Bellanwila
Wimalarathana Thera will preside over the launching ceremony and the
People’s Bank Chairman W Karunajeewa will grace the occasion. Professor
Sunanda Mahendra, Professor Ganganath Dissanayake, Dr Praneeth
Abeysundara and Gamin Sumanasekara will deliver brief discourses.
Samudra Wettasinghe will compere the program.
The book will be presented to all editors of National level Sinhala
Newspapers. The book is a Sarasavi Publication. |
