Brighter future for students

The dark era that existed in the past is over and now they could look forward to work with confidence and hope for a brighter future as has been taught in “Bhagawad Geetha”. Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Minister Douglas Devananda said.

The Minister expressed these sentiments when he met a group of Tamil students from the university of Sri Jayawardenapura recently.

The Minister discussed with the students to arrive at solutions to their problems.

Nitharsan represented the students from distant places like; Jaffna, Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee and Batticaloa and placed the problems that affecting them before the Minister. Among the problems affecting them were, hostel facilities to the grants awarded through “Mahapola Scholarship” program.

The Minister said he had drawn up his own plans to grant them some financial assistance to enable them to continue their studies unhindered and for this purpose, he requested the students to furnish him with their bank account numbers so that he could proceed with his plans. Concerning the hostel facilities of the needy, the Minister said that he would speak to the Vice Chancellor of the University and University Grants Commission to explore the possibility of resolving this problem.

The Minister assured the students that their other problems too would be looked into and sorted out in the near future.

The students should get involved in their studies meaningfully and join hands with the Southern and International societies outside the North and East in addition and work for the betterment of the humanity. Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake on his visit to Jaffna University stated that the students from the North and East should pursue their studies in universities in the South and students from the South should study in the North and East Universities.

He also said that the main reason for the ethnic conflict is the lack of knowledge of the two main indigenous languages among the Sinhalese and Tamil speaking people, therefore, it was of paramount importance for the Sinhala students to learn Tamil language and Tamil students to learn Sinhala language.
