Stop political demos opposite St Philip Neri’s Church
The Blessed Sacrament Fathers at Pettah issued a special communique
deploring the political demonstration held opposite St Philip Neri’s
Church, Pettah on Wednesday by a group of priests and nuns.
“We are deeply saddened that by staging this political demonstration
in front of St Philip Neri’s Church, the public have been misled into
believing that the Blessed Sacrament Fathers have sponsored this
political action,” the communique said.
“We disassociate ourselves from this political demonstration and
request these priests and nuns to find an alternate venue for their
political demonstration in the future”.
Ramazan program on ITN
The Independent Television Network (ITN) will telecast a discussion
and an Islamic song to mark Ramazan Festival today at 11.30 a.m. Javid
Munawwar, Moulavi MD Ramdeen Mahir and Mohamed R. Farook will
participate in the discussion. Roshan Fahmy's Islamic Song will be
featured.
Eid prayers
Nawala Jumma Mosque trustee M H Abu Haniffa will conduct Eid ul Fithr
prayers for women today at 8.00 a m.
Eid ul Fithr prayers for males will commence at 8.45 a.m. It will be

Main Lecture
Priyanka KURUGALA
The main lecture of the State Literary Ceremony will be delivered at
the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on September 21.
The topic of the lecture is Sinhala Drushya Kawyagatha Basathmaka ha
Sahithyika Laksana.
It will be delivered by Prof Sunil Ariyaratna. A cultural show will
follow in which Jayalath Manorathna, Nissanka Diddeniya, Jakson Anthony,
Ratna Lalani Jayakodi will participate.
Music will be directed by Ranjith Balasooriya.
The objectives of the State Literary Ceremony are to encourage new
writers and introduce novel artists to the public.
This program is organized by the National Heritage and Cultural
Affairs Ministry, Cultural Affairs Department and the Sri Lanka Arts
Board in collaboration with the National Literary Sub Committee.
Exhibition postponed
The JET-EX 2010 Exhibition and Trade Fair scheduled to be held from
September 9 to 12 by the National Apprenticeship and Industrial Training
Authority Institute of Engineering Technology has been postponed, the
Organizing Committee said in a press release.
Book launch
Buddhist Temporalities Act (Inception, Evolution Present and
Prospects) written by Attorney-at-law, Mahinda Rajapanawa will be
launched on September 15 at 4 p.m. at the National Museum Auditorium,
Colombo 7.
Prof Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera will be the Chief Guest.
Debate
"Frank Lee Woodward Challenge Trophy-2010" all island debate
tournament organized by Mahinda College, Galle for the fifth year will
be held on September 12 and 13 at the School premises. The debate
tournament is held under the guidance of the Education Ministry.

Bio fuel plants to be encouraged
The attention has been paid to introduce a special purchasing tariff
for bio fuel power plants to encourage them, said Power and Energy
Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka at the Parliament yesterday.
”There are two bio fuel plants in the country at present in
Trincomalee and Badalgama. The total number of electricity units
generated by these power plants is 11 mw,” he said, answering a question
raised by UPFA MP A H M Azwer. He also said that consideration has been
given to use bio fuel plants as a solution for urban waste management.

father of W A P Priyantha Bandara who is missing since November 23,
2009.

Former Minister dies
Former Pollonnaruwa district UNP parliamentarian and onetime Minister
H.G.P. Nelson passed away yesterday after a brief illness. Nelson made
his debut appearance in parliament from the UNP at the 1977 General
election. His remains are lying at his residence at Kaduruwela. The
funeral will be held on September 12.
The Sri Lanka Customs yesterday handed over a consignment of
cigarettes worth Rs 60 million to the Ceylon Tobacco Company
to be destroyed at the Puttalam Cement factory. This
consignment was smuggled by an individual using a name of a
