Eid-ul-Fitr messages

Muslims contributed much to Motherland - President

Mahinda Rajapaksa

President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an Eid-ul-Fitr message states Sri Lanka’s Muslim community has contributed much to the progress of the Motherland, Sri Lankan Muslims have lived in harmony with people of other religions and ethnicities.

The President’s message:

I am pleased to send this message of greetings on the occasion Eid-ul-Fitr celebrated by the devotees of Islam today. This occasion marks the completion of the period of fasting and religious practice which is the most significant tradition of the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. The Muslim community of Sri Lanka joints its brothers in faith the world over in this time of rejoicing at the conclusion of the strict religious observances, in keeping with the teaching of the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet Muhammad.

Sri Lanka’s Muslim community has contributed much to the progress of their Motherland during their long history of presence in Sri Lanka. Over the years they have lived with those of other religions and ethnicities in harmony, and continue to do so. I am confident that Sri Lanka will receive their valued contribution in its development in the years to come, with the nation’s resurgence from terrorism.

The festival is a happy occasion for Muslims in the entire nation as they are able to celebrate it unhindered in the conditions of restored peace in the country.

Muslims displaced due to terrorist atrocities are now being resettled in their places of origin enabling them to carry-out their traditions and religious activities with renewed commitment.

On this very special occasion we look forward to the lasting partnership of the Muslims of Sri Lanka to forge a new Sri Lankan nation of unity, tolerance and harmony.

I wish all followers of Islam of Sri Lanka a happy Eid – Ul – Fitr.

Eid – Mubarak!”

Ramadan a time for intense devotion, reflection - PM

D M Jayaratne

Prime Minister D M Jayaratne in an Eid-ul-Fitr message states: Ramadan is time of intense devotion and reflection. It is a time when Muslims reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith and responsibility that human beings have.

The Prime Minister’s message:

On behalf of the Sri Lankan people I want to extend best wishes to Muslims in Sri Lanka and around the world. Ramadan is to be a festive time – a time when families gather and meals are shared. It is a time of intense devotion and reflection – a time when Muslims fast during the day and perform tarawih prayers at night, reciting and listening to the entire Koran over the course of the month. Ramadan is the month in which Muslims believe the Koran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

It is therefore a time when Muslims reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith and the responsibility that human beings have to one another, and to God.

”These rituals remind us of the principles that we hold in common, and Islam’s role in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings.

”Muslims living in Sri Lanka are privileged to celebrate the Ramadan festival in a peaceful environment while many Muslim states including other nations are still plagued with the shadow of terrorism. Therefore all the Islamic devotees living in Sri Lanka should be determined to attain the spiritual enhancement which the religion of Islam deems to teach.

It is the responsibility of all us to protect the motherland that was liberated for us by the government. Therefore it is my strong belief that we all should unite with the aim of reinstalling the prosperity of Muslim citizens who were severely affected during the time of civil war.

I wish you all a very prosperous Ramadan!”
