There was high action at the SLTA as the women’s final and the men’s
doubles finals were completed late last evening. The defending champion
of the women’s title Amritha Muthiah found it difficult to find her
footing in the first set of the women’s championships against second
seed Kemalie Herath.
However, she was playing defensive game and trying her best not to
make mistakes. In the second set she made a great come-back, playing all
winners and her powerful forehand shots helped her win the game 7-6,
6-3.
In the mens doubles, the semi final match that was continued from day
before between Vimuktha de Alwis and Guyanga Weerasekara and senior
players Jayendra Wijesekara and Roshan de Silva, youth reigned over
experience as Vimuktha and Guyanga managed to beat Jayendra and Roshan
through sheer stamina with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 7-6, 4-6, 8-6.
The final of the mens doubles was between Harshana Godamanne and
partner Rajiv Rajapakse and Vimuktha de Alwis and partner Guyanga
Weerasekara. ‘They are youngsters, let us see’ said Sri Lanka’s number
one Harshana before the match although the audience knew the result of
the match was a foregone conclusion with two Davis Cup players versus
two youngsters.
Even though there were a few careless moments in the first set where
the score stood at 7-6, the invincible partnership of Harshana and Rajiv
won the final in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-3.
