Carlton Cup 2010 Basketball tourney from Sept 5

Schools Junior tourney new addition:

The Basketball Championship for the Carlton Cup 2010 organized by Carlton Sports Club, the sport wing of the Thaarunyata Hetak Organization will be conducted from September 5 to 25 at the Police Courts, Bambalapitiya. This was disclosed to the media at a briefing held at “Sema” Building in Colombo.

This year, the tournament will be conducted in two Divisions “A” and “B”. Division “A” comprise 10 teams that will be divided into two groups. The Division “B” has attracted 21 teams will be divided into four groups, three groups with five teams and one with five. Two teams from each group qualify for the quarters which will be on a knock out basis.

Meanwhile, the organizers this year have included a new tournament for junior cager under-15 schools for boys and girls, said Dr Senaratne. Adding further he said that basketball in Sri Lanka has to developed and with this intention Thaarunyata Hetak decided to include this junior tournament to attract cagers from the young age. Also this year, only schools from Colombo will be in action and next year hope to expand the participation to outstation schools.

The schools tournament too will be played on a knockout basis and the two top teams from each group will move to the semi-finals.

He also noted that many sponsors have come forward as the Thaarunyata Hetak Organization is the most powerful youth organization and it serves the younger generation immensely. The sponsors are Sri Lanka Telecom, Solex Engineering, AMRA Tea and Youth Radio.

Corporate Manager Mrs Vijitha Ratnayake said that her organization sponsors many sports in Sri Lanka and this is a special occasion to join hands with a powerful youth organization. She added that they will continue to support basketball in the future too.

Solex Engineering Marketing Director Muditha Wijetilleke too was of the same view and said that last year’s tournament was a successful one and his company decided to continue the sponsorship in the future too as the company received the expected mileage last year. He added that his company will continue their sponsorship further.

Group “A”: Colombo BC, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Police “A”, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force.

Group “B”: Otters Aquatic Club, Colombo Bulls BC, Carlton BC, Wennappuwa BC.

Division “B”

Group “A”: Old Bens BC, Buffalos’ BC, Don Bosco BC, Moratuwa BC “B”, SMI Property (Pvt) Ltd.

Group “B”: Old Anandians BC, National Youth Council, J’pura University, Old Cambrians, All Greens BC.

Group “C”: Peterites BC, Four Wings BC, Carlton BC “B”, Joes BC, Sri Lanka Police “B”, Red Caps BC.

Group “D”: Field Force BC, Ambalangoda BC, Moratuwa BC “A”, Moratuwa University, Wattala BC “B”.

Boys Under-15: Royal College, S Thomas’ Collge, DS Senanayake College, Colombo International School, Ananda College, Mahanama College, St Peter’s College, Lyceum International School.

Girls: Sirimavo BMV, St Lawrence’s School, St Paul’s Milagiriya, Colombo International School, Holy Family Convent, Good Shepherd Convent, St Joseph’s Convent, Nugegoda, Lyceum International School.
