Namal Rajapaksa in Kilinochchi
A delegation of the Tharunyata Hetak organisation led by its
President Namal Rajapaksa MP spent a whole week in Kilinochchi
looking into the needs of the people who had suffered untold
hardships for 30 years due to the war. A highlight of the tour
was the distribution of a stock of 120,000 exercise books among
students of 82 schools which have been reopened in the district
to ensure uninterrupted education facilities. Here Rajapaksa
with an Infant, who had come with the parents, when he visited
Palai Maha Vidyalaya to distribute exercise books. Rajapaksa’s

Namal Rajapaksa MP who visited the Thalaikulam Hindu Kovil in
Kilinochchi during the tour of North being conducted to the
kovil in a colourful procession. Rajapaksa also handed over Rs
100,000 each to Hindu kovils in Kilinochchi for their
rehabilitation work as a donation from the Tharunyata Hetak
organisation (second). |
Fashion designer contest
The semi-finals of the fashion designer contest 2010 will be held on
August 31 at the Sovereign Corporate Hotel Rajagiriya at 9 a.m.
An eminent panel of judges will choose the best 20 contestants for
the grand finale.
Please hand over the four sketches: Office wear, sports wear evening
wear and Saree wear to Ramzi Rahamans saloon at 65/7A, D.S. Senanayake
Mawatha, Borella.
Age is no barrier male designers are welcome. One has to pay an entry
fee when they hand over the sketches.
Please bring out your best designs to impress the judges.

Large crowds for Kandy Perahera

Large crowds turned up to witness the fifth and final Kumbal Perahera
of Kandy Esala Pageant on Thursday night despite the inclement weather.
The rains ceased when the Perahera commenced.
A good number of foreign tourists were also present to witness the
grand pageant.
Parents barred from exam centres
Dharma SRI ABEYRATNE
Parents will not be allowed to enter Examination Centres when the
Year Five Scholarship Examination is being held, Examinations
Commissioner General Anura Edirisinghe said. The examination will be
held tomorrow.
Teachers accompanying candidates for the examination are also
requested to leave the Examination Centres no sooner they direct the
students to their respective exam halls. While the examination will be
in progress, neither teachers nor parents will be allowed to enter
Examination Halls in case of any reason. Students will be given a
30-minute break to attend their needs.
Devale robbers arrested

Peradeniya Police yesterday took into custody three persons together
with valuable brass items they are alleged to have stolen from the
historic Dodanwela Natha Devale. The suspects were natives of Danthurai.
They broken into the Devale 10 days ago and stolen the brassware.
Drunk drivers increase on Galle Road

There is an increase in drunk drivers on the Galle Road, Panadura,
Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake said.
The Magistrate had fined 200 drunk motorcyclists and motor vehicle
drivers during the last six months.
Each offender was fined Rs 7,000 and their licences suspended for two
months.
Info sought on assault on IR Deputy Commissioner
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) special team is
investigating the assault on Inland Revenue Department Matara branch
Deputy Commissioner H M Denzil.
A reward of Rs 500,000 will be offered to anyone giving information
about the incident. Information can be given on 0113-133 707, 0113-133

Jumbo tramples man to death

An 85-year-old man died after being trampled by an elephant on August
19 morning.
The elephant and mahout were going to Egal Oya while M A Piyasekara
was walking on the other side of the road.
The elephant had pulled the man with its trunk, dashed him and
trampled him. Piyasekara died before admission to Ingiriya Hospital.
The mahout was arrested. The elephant was later brought under
control.
Bulathsinhala Police are investigating.
Kidney patient seeks help
Ajith Jayasundara, 38, of 130, Kalubowila Road, Dehiwela is at the
end stage of renal disease.
He needs to undergo a Renal Transplant as a definitive treatment.
Jayasundara also needs a kidney donor.
Jayasundara is in need of a kidney transplant due to chronic kidney
disease.
His blood group is A positive.
Sala Nisala
A Sala Nisala musical clinic program organised by the National
Thalassaemia prevention program in aid of the Thalassaemia Prevention
Fund will be held at the Bishop College hall, Colombo on August 20 at 6
pm with the participation of Dr Kapila Krishantha Suriyarachchi and
Visharada Amarasiri Pieris.
Esala Festival
The annual esala festival of “Gaha Kovila alias Divya Raja Bhawana”
of Kosgoda will be held from August 20 to 22.
SLLA Regional Seminar
The Sri Lanka Library Association (SLLA) Golden Jubilee Colombo
Regional Seminar will be held at the Industrial Technology Institute
Auditorium, Colombo 07 on August 28 at 9 a.m. The seminar will mark the
50th birth anniversary of the SLLA.
Spectacles distribution
A free spectacles distribution program organized by the
Thalakiriyagama senior citizens association at Galewela will be held at
the Thalakiriyagama Govi Sevana premises on August 28.
Coordinating committee meeting
The Biyagama divisional coordinating committee meeting will be held
at the Biyagama Divisional Secretariat auditorium, Makola today at 2.00
p.m. under Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa’s patronage.
The progress report on development projects will be reviewed at the
meeting.
Public seminar, AGM
The annual general meeting and public seminar of the People’s
Movement for the Rights of Patients will be held August 28 from 9.30
a.m. at the Centre for Society Religion Hall (Fatima Church premises)
281, Deans Road, Maradana.
The main talk will be delivered by Medical Faculty former Dean Prof
Carlo Fonseka. He will speak ‘How the transnational drug companies are
deceiving the people’ and ‘what we and the Government could do about it
so that all people would have access to quality drugs at affordable
prices’. Health Action International Asia-Pacific Coordinator Dr K
Balasubramaniam will also speak.
Mobile service
A mobile service to issue National Identity Cards, present
spectacles, dengue awareness programs, health camps among others will he
held at the New Kathiresan Kovil, Bambalapitiya today at 9 a.m. It is
organized by the Bambalapitiya Police and will be held under the
patronage of Petroleum Minister Susil Premajayantha.
Public Day
Labour Relation and Productivity Promotion Minister Gamini Lokuge in
a press release said measures have been taken to implement the Public
Day with a new concept leaving the public the opportunity to meet the
Minister, Deputy Minister, Ministry Secretary, Labour Commissioner
General and other officers at the same time.
Measures to develop fishery industry

In a bid to develop the inland fishery industry in the Northern
Province the National Aqua Culture Development Authority had released
1.6 million fingerlings into tanks and other water bodies in the
province, said its Chairman Dr Jayantha Chandrasoma. He said these tanks
and water bodies include the Akkarayankulam, Iranamadu tank,
Vannerikulam and Puttirippu in Killinochchi district and Pavakkulam,
Taratirayakulam, Mamaduwa, Talmaduwa and Kanarayakulam in Vavuniya
district.
Errant traders fined
Jaffna special corr
One hundred and two traders in the Jaffna town, Manipay, Sandilipay
and Chunnakam, were caught for offences like selling goods above the
controlled price, non display of price list in the shop, and selling
goods past the expiry date. Cases have been filed in the Jaffna and
Mallakam Magistrate’s Courts against the errant traders.
This sudden raid was done on the directive of Jaffna GA and Consumer
Protection Authority.
Educational tour
The 222 metre long bridge between Karathivu and Sangupiddy will be
ready for the use of the public before the end of October this year.
This assurance was given by the engineer in charge of the bridge when
Northern Province Governor G A Chandrasiri made a sudden visit to the
bridge to find out the progress of work. The Government has allocated Rs
900 million for the construction of the bridge. |
