International congress

The third International Congress of the Society of South Asian
Archeology (SOSAA) commenced yesterday morning at the Sociology faculty
auditorium under the patronage of Kelaniya University Vice Chancellor
Dr. Sarath Amunugama .
The two-day congress will be continued till today with the
participation of Archaeologists, researchers and scholars working on
various scientific aspects in the archaeological field as chemists and
geologists. SOSAA General Secretary Prof. Vasant Shinde said the
congress aims to bring together scholars studying and researching the
rich culture of South Asia on one platform for exchange their data and
ideas.
The society is keen to play a significant role in brining South Asia
together as a common cultural heritage, he added.
Prof. Shinde said South Asia is one of the most populous and birth
place of world religions, technologies and sciences with very rich
traditions which needs to be brought to the world community.
Participating as a Chief Guest of the inaugural ceremony Kelaniya
University Vice Chancellor Dr. Sarath Amunugama said the Kelaniya
University had been chosen for the first time as a venue for the
congress after considering its unique historical background.
As an educational institution the Kelaniya University is originally
known as the Vidyalankara Pirivena and received university status in
1959. Dr. Amunugama appreciated the contribution of Centre for South
Asian Studies of the University of Kelaniya for undertaking the
herculean task of organizing a congress.
The outstanding contribution received to the archeology field by Ex-
Director Generals of Archeology Department Prof. Senake Bandaranayake,
Dr. Siran Deraniyagala and Dr. Roland Silva had been appreciated by the
SOSAA.
