More crime prevention in Jaffna
Policemen belonging to nine police stations arrested 66 persons in a
joint round up carried out in different parts of Jaffna peninsula.
The police sources said that this type of round up is being done in
the Eastern and Southern Provinces too. In last month’s round up in
Jaffna more than a hundred persons have been arrested and produced in
courts.
This month the arrested included persons selling ganja, illicitly
brewing and selling kasippu and violating traffic rules. Persons wanted
in connection with thefts were also hauled up.
The police have increased patrols and arrested teenagers who harass
women and girls.
Open sluice for better cultivation
The residents of Ramanathapuram in Kilinochchi area complain that
even though four months have elapsed after the resettlement in
Vaddakachchi and Ramanathapuram areas the water channel from Iranaimadhu
tank that goes to Ramanathapuram and Vaddakachchi has dried as a result
of the water sluice is closed. In the middle of last month the damaged
channel near the tank has been repaired and the sluice has been
partially opened to allow the water to go up to Vaddakachchi only. The
Ramanathapuram farmers complain that their fields have no water for
cultivation. The wells in the area too have gone dry. The cattle are
roaming in search of water.
They urge to take action to open the sluice to allow the water to
flow freely through the channel. The damaged channel must be repaired
immediately. Failure to do so will result in complete failure of Yala
cultivation of paddy, they say.
Convocation
The annual convocation of Jaffna University will take place on
October 6. The Vice Chancellor of the University Prof N Shanmugalingan
will award the post graduate degrees, degrees and the diplomas.
Nedunkulam tank repaired
The Nedunkulam tank in Moor Road Mannar has been repaired after a
lapse of 45 years, with the cooperation of the people and Navy personnel
in Mannar. This tank is one of the biggest and deepest tanks in Mannar
and catered to the people’s requirement. This tank was filled with sea
water when the tsunami lashed over the Mannar coast.
For years the tank remained unrepaired and uncared for. With the
onset of rainy season the tank will be completely filled with water. It
will meet the irrigation needs of the cultivators.
Fake notes in Jaffna
-Fake thousand rupee notes are in circulation in Jaffna. The notes
are surreptitiously passed off to tipplers in arrack taverns when they
are in a state of intoxication. Incidents of unsuspecting people taking
fake notes to banks to be deposited in their savings account are also
reported. The new blue notes with President Rajapaksa’s picture on the
back are the printed fake notes in circulation.
Armed gang robs Rs one lakh
An armed gang entered into the house of one Parameswary at Wyman
Road, close to Nallur Kandasamy Kovil Saturday midnight and robbed Rs
one lakh and gold jewellery. There were only three women in the house.
