DNA clash with police

DNA parliamentarians Vijitha Herath, Ajith Kumara and Southern Provincial Councillor Nalin Hewage were arrested by Galle police yesterday for allegedly assaulting two police officers inside the Galle Police station.

The two police officers were admitted to the Karapitiya General Hospital.

According to Police Spokesman SP Prishantha Jayakody, these parliamentarians and their supporters have come to the Galle police station and demanded the release of seven suspects who participated in an illegal protest in Galle.

A heated argument has erupted between the police officers and the parliamentarians when the latter demanded the release of seven suspects.

They have allegedly tried to break open the cell in which the seven suspects were detained in the police station premises. The two police officers came under attack when they resisted their attempt. A group of DNA supporters including its parliamentarians have started a protest from Olcott junction in the city blocking the road.

The Police officers have also come under an attack after the Police warned them to move away from the road. Several police officers were injured in this attack too. The parliamentarians and the seven suspects were to be produced before the Galle Magistrate yesterday.
