Signs agreements with Seashells Hotels, Blue Continent:

BOI to strengthen tourism expansion

The Board of Investment has identified the tourism sector, to be a major player in the economic development of the country.


Chairman / Director General Jayampathi Bandaranayake presents the BOI Certificates of Registration to Seashells Hotels Directors Thilak De Soyza and Hiran Cooray.

Major tourist attractions are focused around the island's beaches located in the Southern and Eastern parts of the country, ancient heritage sites located in the interior of the country and resorts located in the mountainous regions of the country.

With the view of supporting the expansion of the Sri Lankan tourism industry, the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka granted investment approval to Seashells Hotels Limited for refurbishment and upgrading of a hotel and Blue Continent for the establishment of a new resort.

Chairman/ Director General Jayampathi Bandaranayake signed the agreement on behalf of the BOI and presented the BOI Certificates of Registration to the investors.

The agreement signed with Seashells Hotels is for a project to refurbish and upgrade the Seashells Hotel located at Kochchikade. The project representing an investment of US $ 3.3 million will refurbish and upgrade the hotel providing spa facilities, an additional pool and conference facilities. With the new refurbishment operations the number of rooms will be increased to 84 rooms. Refurbishment operations are expected to be completed by November this year. Company Directors Thilak De Soyza and Hiran Cooray signed the agreement on behalf of the company.

Blue Continent signed an agreement to establish a 150 roomed tourist resort at Passikudah, Batticaloa. The venture sponsored by Maldivian investors represents an investment of US $ 6 million.

The hotel will establish a 150 room tourist resort in a 15 acre land and will commence operations by 2011 December.

On behalf of Blue Continent Saleema Mohamed signed the agreement.
