The last opportunity for Sri Lankan athletes to reach the qualifying standards to make their way to compete at the upcoming Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, the 88th Senior National Athletic Championship starts today at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Sports Complex in Diyagama, Homagama.

Adding a new look to the highly recognized National track and field meet, for the first time, a team of five athletes from Malaysia will be seen in action at Diyagama track, responding to an invitation by the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka.

With Sri Lanka Telecom once again being the sponsor for the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka organized meet will also be the first stage for the selection for the 2012 and 2013 South Asian Games.

A total of 710 local athletes will compete at this year’s meet while the Hammer Throw event is the new addition to the events of Senior Athletic Nationals. The meet concludes on Sunday.
