Rabies prevention meets results
The ongoing Rabies prevention program conducted at both district and
provincial level has met with desired results, says Health Ministry
Public Veterinary Services Director Dr P L Harishchandra.
According to him the program is conducted on three levels such as
controlling the dog density, improving therapy for patients and
injecting dogs to prevent the disease.
From January to June 2010, authorities has subjected over 600,000
stray dogs to vaccinations. In addition over 25,000 she-dogs have been
sterilized. Also over 200,000 vaccinations have been taken place on
suspected cases of rabies. The Health Ministry spends Rs. 300 million
annually on this vaccination process.
According to Dr Harischandra the Health Ministry has spent Rs. 30
million on serialization procedures on dogs and a further Rs 25 million
on Vaccination during the year 2010 so far.
According to the Health Ministry figures up to June this year, 25
deaths have occurred due to Rabies.
