Rauf Hakeem speaks of cronyism in SC
Muslim Congress Leader and parliamentarian Rauff Hakeem said that the
Superior Court of the country would be packed with nominees whom will
not be estopped by any other means other than impeachment. "Some of the
Judges are displaying absolute cronyism," he added.
Hakeem made these comments on the Supreme Court at a workshop on
Constitutional Amendments, organized by the Bakeer Markar Foundation
Tuesday.
"By this time we agree on the 17th Amendment, the Supreme Court would
be packed with nominees who will not be estopped by any other means
other than impeachment," he said. He said that the confidence in the
Supreme Court has eroded significantly under former Chief Justice Sarath
N. Silva. "The confidence indicator in the judiciary today particularly
in the Superior Courts has been eroded thanks to the ten year tenure of
Sarath N. Silva," he added
The SLMC parliamentarian added that this situation has worsened by
continuous violation of the 17th Amendment in appointment of judges to
the Supreme Court.
Hakeem stated that a group of parliamentarians were discussing about
impeachment. "So much so some of the members of parliament have been
discussing about impeachment. Just to at least rein in some of the
judges who are displaying absolute cronyism, he added.
He added that the Fundamental Rights applications have been dismissed
in limine without notice being issued.
