Rs 177,500 as fines on 883 errant traders
The Consumer Affairs Authority Flying Squad in association with the
Department of Weights and Measures has launched raids to nab errant
traders who fleece unsuspecting customers through various ruses. These
ruses include the non-display of price lists, charging prices in excess
of the marked price,
alteration of the marked price, sale of outdated goods and failure to
issue certificates of guarantee where required, a spokesman for the
Department of Government Information said.
He said fines totalling Rs 177,500 were imposed on 883 errant traders
caught during raids conducted between May and July this year of them 362
had not displayed price lists, 358 had sold goods at exhorbitant prices
much above the marked price, 163 had sold outdated items or altered
prices. The raids were conducted in Colombo, Gampaha, Puttalam, Kalutara,
Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and several other areas.
