The 19th AGM of the Sri Lanka - Canada Business Council (SLCBC), of
the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce was held recently at the "Canada Club"
under the patronage of Canadian High Commissioner Bruce Levy.
SLCBC, formed in August 1991, currently serves a membership of
forty-two companies.
Its primary objectives are to provide advocacy and facilitate the
promotion of bilateral trade, investment, joint ventures, technology
transfer, industrial cooperation and tourism between Sri Lanka and
Canada. The council congratulated the Government being re-elected with a
clear majority, as this will be an essential factor for economic and
social development in Sri Lanka.
"The peaceful environment and the political stability will be vital
for Sri Lanka to move forward in its rapid development path. The country
is well poised to become a strong economy in the Asian region and we
congratulate President Mahinda Rajapaksa's government being re-elected
with a clear majority as this will no doubt be an essential factor for
economic and social development in Sri Lanka", SLCBC, Immediate Past
President Rajah Abeyasinghe said.
"We need to explore avenues of trade improvement between the two
countries as there is room for enhancement. Sri Lanka could benefit from
his move and could build long lasting strong relationships," Canadian
High Commissioner Bruce Levy said. "We could collectively build the half
billion dollar trade volume by tapping the potential sectors for growth.
Agriculture and apparel dominate the relationship, but it is expected
that we could soon see great progress in major infrastructure and IT
sector. It is important to explore these possibilities and form more
joint ventures," he said.
Tan Beng Chuan was elected President. Tan Beng Chuan is currently the
Singapore (Sri Lanka) Club President Mentor & ex - President.
Tan spelled out his plans for the year ahead and called on members to
actively participate in the forthcoming Sri Lanka Government endorsed
business promotion trip to Canada in October with Export Development
Ministry Secretary and other Government officials. |
