Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration
The annual Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration of Visakha
Vidyalaya will be held on July 23 at 5.15pm at the school’s Jeremias
Dias Hall. The Oration will be delivered by Kelaniya University, Faculty
of Medicine Senior Professor Ira Thabrew who is also visiting
Professor/Research Fellow, IBMBB, University of Colombo. The oration
will be ‘Nature’s Secret for the benefit of Human Health’.
Memorial Lecture
The eight John Diandas Memorial Lecture organized by the Chartered
Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Sri Lanka in memory of John
Diandas will be held on July 23 at 5.30pm at the Ceylon Chamber of
Commerce Auditorium, 50, Navam Mawatha, Colombo 2. This will be the
eighth lecture in honour of Diandas who was an Honorary Fellow and a
past Chairman of CILT Sri Lanka.
Professor Chandana Wirasinghe from the Shulich School of Engineering,
University of Calgary, Canada will deliver this oration on the theme ‘A
Methodological Approach to Urban Public Transit Planning’.
Nethra pinkama
The Nethra Pratistapana Pinkama, painting eyes on the newly erected
Buddha statue and opening of the new Shrine Room at Aryasinharamaya,
Alawala, Veyangoda will be held on July 23 under the patronage of Prime
Minister D M Jayaratne.
The function held to mark the occasion is presided over by Amarapura
Maha Sangasabha Mahanayake Most Ven Dauldena Gnanissara Thera.
Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Felix Perera and Deputy Ministers Sarana
Gunawardene and Lasantha Alagiyawanna are due to participate.
Pirith to mark BOC Anniversary
The annual Pirith Pinkama to commemorate Bank of Ceylon’s 71st
anniversary will be held on July 30 at 8.00 p.m at the 01st Floor of the
Head office. This would be followed by an almsgiving and Atapirikara
Pooja to the Maha Sangha the next morning.
A colourful Perahera will start at 6.00 p.m under the sponsorship of
Metropolitan Branch, Western Province (North) Office, Eastern Province
Office and all other staff members at the York street building and the
branches located in Fort.
It will reach the Sri Sambuddhaloka Vihara in Fort.
The Pirith Ceremony will commence after the Perahera reaches the Head
Office.
Lectures by Canadian scholar
Scholar Dr Jamal Badawi of Canada will visit Sri Lanka on a lecture
tour organized by the Center for Islamic Studies (CIS), Wellawatte,
Colombo 6.
He will deliver a lecture titled ‘Reforming Islam or Reforming
Muslims’ on July 30 at 7.00 p.m. at D.S. Jayasinghe Hall, Dehiwela.
He will also address a Shariah Forum titled ‘Muslims in a Non Muslim
society’ on July 31 at 4.30 p.m. at Hotel Ranmuthu, Colombo 3. Sheikh
Esam Ishaq from Bahrain along with Mufthi Rizvi will be other members of
the forum.
Dr Badawi will also address a symposium titled ‘Role of Muslims in
Emerging Post-War Sri Lanka’ on August 1 at 8.30 a.m. at Miami Reception
Hall, Colombo 6. Other participants including Sarvodaya Movement Founder
Dr A.T. Ariyarathne and Institute of on temporary Studies President and
RICEAP, Malaysia Vice President Rizwan Wu Abdullah.
Book launch
Kovai Ansar’s Kanavukalin Pirasavam book launch ceremony will be held
on July 25 at 4.30 p.m. at Tamil Sangam Auditorium, Colombo 6. It will
be held under the patronage of Hashim Omar.
Esala Bakthi gee
An Esala Bakthi gee recital program organized by the Buddhist Society
of Christ Church Girls College, Baddegama will be held at the school on
July 24 at 5.30 p.m. Southern Province Chief Minister Shan Wijayalal de
Silva will participate.
Workshop
A briefing workshop on the activities carried out by the Planters’
Association of Ceylon (PAC) in collaboration with the Plantation Human
Development Trust in estates for workers welfare organized by the PAC
will be held on July 25 at 10.00 a.m. at the PHDT auditorium, St.
Andrews Drive, Nuwara Eliya.
Esala Udanaya
The Bulathsinhala Esala Udanaya organized by Bulathsinhala Pradeshiya
Sabha will be held from July 25 to 29 at the Public Grounds.
Blood donation
A blood donation campaign will be held at the Auditor General's
Department at Independence Square, Colombo 07 from 9.30 am to 2.00 pm on
July 23 Friday with the participation of Auditor General S
Swarnajothi.
Vocational training for disabled youth
Priyanka KURUGALA
All vocational training centres conducted under the aegis of the
Social Services Department will enroll disabled students for the
vocational training programs for 2011, Social Services Director
Hemachandra Hewage said.
He said 400 disabled students will be accommodated in courses offered
by these centres, Hewage said.
Individuals between 16 and 35 years and unmarried with visual hearing
and speech impairment and physically and mentally retarded can follow
vocational training courses from Social Service Department Centres.
Public talk
Dr L Gunaruwan will deliver a public talk in English on
"Applicability of Buddhist Economics to present day life" at the meeting
of the Servants of Buddha Society on Saturday, July 24 at 4.30 pm at
Maithree Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.
AGM
The 47th Annual General Meeting of People's Bank Officers'
Association will be held on Saturday, July 31 from 9.30 on wards at the
Galadari Hotel, Lotus Road, Colombo 01.
Seminar
A special seminar will be held under the theme Yovun Dayata Diriyak
at the Mihilaka Madura at the BMICH from 9.30 am on July 22.
The Seminar is held for over 500 apprentices and trainers engaged in
the Rural Industrial field.
Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Deputy
Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake will participate in the seminar
organized by the National Design Centre.
Function
A function to evaluate the services of former Dean of the Phylosophy
Faculty late Professor K N Jayathilake will be held at the Peradeniya
University Conference Hall at 3.30 pm on July 23 under the patronage of
Professor R D Gunaratne.

The 25th Annual General Meeting of the Colombo Plan International
Society will be held at 5.00 p.m. on August 6 at the Sasakawa Memorial
Cultural Centre, Colombo 3.
Secretary-General, Colombo Plan Secretariat Patricia Yoon-Moi Chia
will be the Chief Guest. Upali S Jayasekera will preside.
New envoys present credentials
Five Ambassadors and two High Commissioners appointed for Sri Lanka
presented their credentials to President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the
Presidential Secretariat yesterday.
They are Republic of Iraq Ambassador Kahtan Taha Khalaf Kali, the
Kingdom of Swaziland High Commissioner Mpumelelo Joseph Hlophe,the
Kingdom of Bhutan Ambassador Dasho Bap Kesang, Brunei Darussalam High
Commissioner Sidek Ali, Republic of Armenia Ambassador Ara Hakobyan,
Republic of Macedonia Ambassador Petar Jovanovski and People's
Democratic Republic of Algeria Ambassador Mohammed-Hacene.
