More tsunami warning towers for North

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) will set-up 25 tsunami early warning towers along the Northern coastal belt in addition to the existing towers.

DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippilly said as part of covering all coastal areas by establishing tsunami early warning towers, the DMC has taken measures to set-up another 25 early warning towers along the Northern coastal belt. The DMC has already started constructing the tsunami early warning towers in the Northern coastal belt, he added.

"These tsunami early warning towers will be set-up in addition to 55 existing early warning towers in the Northern Province. The early warning towers have been set-up to alert people in case of a tsunami or cyclone," Kodippilly told the Daily News.

He said many tsunami early warning towers particularly in Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts were damaged or destroyed during the war.

The DMC will set up early warning towers in Mannar, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Jaffna districts while a tower will be set-up in Delf Island.

Around 25 tsunami early warning towers were built along the coastal line from Puttalam to Trincomalee. The number of early warning towers will also be increased in the Eastern and Southern coastal belts.
