Undergraduates of the Mass Communication Department who conducted a survey on social attitudes with regard to national development of Sri Lanka during the Presidential and general election periods were awarded certificates at a ceremony held at the Kelaniya University Mass Communication Department yesterday.

According to the research it was found that President Mahinda Rajapaksa would emerge victorious in the Presidential Election with a percentage of more than 60 percent of the poll.

They also predicted that the UPFA would obtain an average of 65 percent of the poll at the general election. Addressing the occasion, Mass Communication Department Head Dr. Rohana Laxman Piyadasa said this is the most powerful research done by university students even Americans were not successful to predict about the winner of the Presidential Election or to predict the percentage of votes in their surveys so accurately.

So this is a great success Kelaniya university students have reached.

It is necessary to do good research for the development of the country. It is rare to do research in universities about public opinion. Main reason for this is majority of students think that to become a graduate is the only outcome of University education.

Future of the world depends on research. It is difficult to do social science research as they depend on human behavior. So it is difficult to engage in good quality researches. But we should not neglect research as they play an important role in the development of the country, said Economic Department Dr.M.M.Gunathilaka.
