PM wants Deegavapiya upgraded


Prime Minister D M Jayaratne being accompanied by Deghavapiya Chief Incumbent Ven Nannapurave Buddharakkita Thera and UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya. Minister P Dayaratne and Eastern PC member Daya Gamage were also present.

Prime Minister DM Jayaratne who visited the ancient Buddhist heritage site Deeghavapiya yesterday ordered officials to renovate the dilapidated infrastructure facilities adjoining the site within two weeks.

The Premier also opened the newly built shrine room of the temple built at a cost of Rs 30 million. He laid the foundation stone to build a stupa considered to be the world's tallest when completed. The planned structure will cost Rs 320 million.

The Premier also visited the ancient Buddhangala Rajamaha Viharaya. His visit coincided with religious ceremonies to mark Poson.
