The Trident Wielding
God of the Ocean, Poseidon:

Poseidon! What an awesome Greek god. One of my favourites amongst the
pantheon of Greek gods; the trident wielding lord of the Ocean. Equal to
Zeus King of the Gods in dignity. But if you ask me Poseidon is the god
to be admired from his family of Greek Gods and Goddesses.

For those of us who have nurtured a passion for Greek Gods and their
adventures Poseidon is no stranger. He has been admired, appreciated and
worshiped through the centuries.
However he immediately attained cult and celebrity status when the
movie ‘Percy Jackson and the lightening thief,’ hit cinemas throughout
the world. He was played by Kevin Mckidd. I may have not read the Percy
Jackson books, but what does that matter? I know my standard Greek God
myths having in my possession the Greek Myths by Robert Graves. Now
Greek Myths, Robert Graves may not be Percy Jackson but it is the
original gospel source of information on Greek Gods.

According to the Percy Jackson books from what I’ve read of them on
the internet, and seen in the movie, Zeus created a law saying that Gods
and Goddesses are prohibited from interacting with their Demi god
children. In the movie Percy Jackson’s mother calls Poseidon;
‘dazzling’.
Robert Graves says that when Poseidon emerges from the ocean sea
monsters frisk around his chariot. Can you even imagine that kind of
power? The charisma and immortality? However Poseidon’s father was not a
very cool guy when you take into consideration that he swallowed
Poseidon, Hades (his brother) and their other siblings. The youngsters
were saved by their younger brother Zeus.
Zeus, Poseidon and Hades later challenged Cronos and defeated him.
Zeus rules the sky with his thunderbolts. Hades, the underworld with
his Helmut of darkness and Poseidon the Ocean with that trident of his.
That was how they divided the world with the earth being common to all.
And with that trident he makes the earth shake.
According to Robert Graves Poseidon is quarrelsome. In Percy Jackson
and the lightening thief he tells Percy that he (Poseidon) will always
stand by him (Percy) and talk to him (Percy) in his thoughts and dreams. |
