ANCL fund for pohoyage construction
The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd will set up a fund to obtain
devotees' contributions to construct a pohoyage, a residential building
for monks, at the Mihintala Rajamaha Viharaya as the present building is
dilapidated.
The fund will be setup on the instructions of Mihintala Rajamaha
Viharaya Chief Incumbent Namalvewa Dhammakeerthi Sri Ratanasara Nayaka
Thera at a ceremony to illuminate Mihintalawa on Poson Poya day.
How contributions can be made will be announced on Poson Poya day.
Murali postpones retirement
Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan yesterday intimated his
decision to quit One Day International cricket to President Mahinda
Rajapaksa and Sri Lanka Cricket Board.
However, they wanted him to reconsider his decision and remain in the
Sri Lanka team till the end of the next World Cup. He has acceded to the
request.
A walk on the theme ‘A country free of Malaria’ was held
from Independence Square to the Viharamaha Devi Park
yesterday. The walk had been organized by the Anti-Malaria
Campaign to make people aware about Malaria coinciding with
the program to eliminate Malaria from the island.

A staff reporter boarded a three-wheeler and told the driver that he
wanted to proceed to National Transport Commission office, Narahenpita.
"OK, I'll take you there to the notorious den of robbers," the driver
responded.
"All the people there are rogues," he added.
Rights plea settled
Wasantha RAMANAYAKE
The rights application filed by UNP parliamentarian Rosy Senanayake
against the Bambalapitiya OIC was settled before the Supreme Court
yesterday.
In terms of the settlement respondent OIC Upul Senevirathne tendered
an apology to petitioner Rosy Senanayake in open Court.
Accordingly court moved to withdraw the case.
The Bench comprised Justice Shiranee Thilakawardene, Justice P.A.
Rathanyake PC and Justice S.I. Imam. The petitioner complained to the
Court the first respondent Police Officer verbally abused and threatened
her in violation of her rights while she was engaged in a protest
campaign on June 03, 2008.
Counsel Sujeewa Senasinghe appeared for the petitioner.
Senior State Counsel Riyaz Hamza appeared for the respondents.
Partial lunar eclipse on June 26
There will be partial lunar eclipse on June 26 visible to the regions
covering Eastern Asia, Australia, the Pacific and America.
Since it occurs during the day, the eclipse is not properly visible
to Sri Lanka.
The people in the Eastern part of Sri Lanka can catch a glimpse of it
at the eclipse end around 6.30 p.m. when the moon is rising from the
Eastern horizon, said Dr. Chandana Jayaratne, Senior Lecturer in
Physics, University of Colombo and Consultant to the Space Applications
Division of the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies.
The eclipse begins 2.27 p.m. on June 26 during the day with the moon
entering into the penumbra of the earth’s shadow (less dark shadow) and
ends up at 7.50 p.m.
Sri Lanka standard time. The visible part of the eclipse begins at
3.47 p.m. with the moon entering into the Umbra - the dark part of the
earth’s shadow and ends up when the moon leaves the Umbra at 6.30 pm
Free accommodation
Sri Lanka Railways will provide free accommodation to pilgrims who
travel to Anuradhapura in trains during the Poson season up to June 27
in the pilgrims rest opposite the Anuradhapura railway station.
Water service, sanitation facilities as well as security will be
provided to the pilgrims who stay at the pilgrims rest by the Railways.
More accommodation for pilgrims who travel by train will be available
opposite the Mihintale railway station.
Church Feast
The Church feast of St. Anthony’s church, Kollupitiya will be held on
June 27. The trilingual festive high mass will be at 8 am.
Vespers will be held Saturday at 6.30 pm followed by benediction. A
procession will take place with the statue of St. Anthony in an
illuminated chariot.
National convention
A three-day national convention of Shaduliya Thareeka will be held at
Rawlathul Athkiyya Jummah Masjid, Panadura from June 25 to 27, presided
by Khaleefathussaduli Moulavi Al Haj J. Abdul Hameed Alim (Bahji).
Muslim Theologians, scholars, professors and Muslim laders from
various countries will attend this convention.
Sarath Wimalasiri on Shraddhanjalee
The Sinhala National Service of the Sri Lanka Broadcasting
Corporation will present a well known lyric composer, poet and a free
lance journalist W.K. Sarath Wimalasiri through Shraddhanjalee program
on June 25 from 12.00 p.m.to 12.45 p.m.
Missing
S.M. Nayana Kumari, a resident of Koruwawa, Polpithigama, is missing
from May 18. She is four feet six inches tall and has long hair plaited
and her front teeth have turned brown. She is of average build and
smiles easily. Her husband M.G. Somaratne of the same address has
informed police that she is still missing, Police Spokesman Prishantha
Jayakody said in a press release yesterday.
Lecture
The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be
held at 5 p.m. on June 28 at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the
Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 07. The
title of the lecture is "Laos and the Sinhalese Connections" presented
by Dr. Hema Goonatilake. The lecture is open to the public.
Workshop
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka will conduct an
awareness workshop program for the press and electronic media personnel
in Colombo district on July 9 at 10 a.m. at the Government Information
Department auditorium at Polhengoda, Narahenpita.
