The Consumer Protection Act will be amended to protect consumers,
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando said at the
Staff Development Program of the Consumer Affairs Authority at Renuka
Hotel, Colombo yesterday.
He said he will solve Consumer Affairs Authority problems while the
authority should also try to provide better service to the consumers.
All officers will meet in every two months and select the best officer.
The Co-operatives and Internal Trade Ministry and the Consumer
Affairs Authority have no right in Consumers Act to recommend a
guaranteed price for breads. But it is necessary to have a good quality,
specially the relevant weight should be in breads though prices have
gone up, said the Minister. In the presidential election time, there was
a lack of rice in the country. So the government decided to waive the
tax for wheat flour. But now we don't have that type of problem. So the
government decided to impose the tax again with the objective of saving
farmers in the country by giving good price for rice.
Consumer Affairs Authority Chairman, Rumy Marzook and Consumer
Affairs Authority Officials also participated.
