Bakery owners increase bread prices

The All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association Executive Committee increased the price of a loaf of bread by four rupees from yesterday the All Ceylon Bakery Owners' Association Chairman N.K. Jayawardena disclosed in a press conference in Colombo.

Along with this price increase, the prices of other bakery products too will increase. The new price of a loaf of bread will be between Rs 39 to Rs 44, he said. He said the Association hopes to bring down the weight of a loaf of bread from 450 grams - the Government controlled weight to 400 grams.

"About 75 percent of the bakery owners are producing bread below 450 grams weight. They have to sell the bread through intermediaries.

As cost of production has increased, the bakery owners have now decided to recover the expenses incurred in paying the Nation Building Tax too from the consumers by increasing the price, he added.
