President at Anuradhapura

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will open the Ruwanweliseya for public veneration today after a full refurbishment. Highways Deputy Minister Dr. Mervyn Silva MP and a group of Buddhist devotees have borne the total cost of refurbishment which exceeded Rs 4 million.


Milco’s dairy products prices to remain

Milco, the main company producing dairy products from locally produced milk will not increase the price of milk powder on a Livestock and Rural Community Development Minister Arumugan Thondaman’s directive.

The increase in milk powder is due to the increase in the prices of imported milk powder. This increase in price will not affect Milco’s milk powder as it depends only on local milk production.

Milco has decided to give a 10 percent increased price to farmers who are Milco suppliers.

Milco processes around 55 million lt to 60 million lt of milk per year produced by around 37,000 farmer families.


Continuous water supply for pilgrims

Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawadena has directed the National Water Supply and Drainage Board to supply water to the large number of pilgrims expected in Anuradhapura and Mihintale during the Poson season, a ministry press release said yesterday.

Water supply to pilgrims rests, alms halls and all public water taps will be continued day and night while there will be temporary water tanks for use by the public serviced by the NWS&DB, the release also said. Water bowsers will be parked in several places of the holy city to meet any shortage of water while water for sanitation will also be available the press release said.

No tax on fuel

No tax has been imposed on fuel and there will be no change in fuel prices.

The Opposition accusations on imposing new taxes on fuel is totally fabricated, Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

According to Minister Premajayantha the price of a barrel of crude oil in the world market has gone up to US$ 78 and the price of a barrel of refined oil is marked at US$ 86. The oil imported about two months back is being distributed in Sri Lanka now and at the time of import the price of a barrel of oil was US$ 87. - NG


Community water schemes for North

Community water supply schemes and sanitation projects will be commenced in the North providing water and sanitation facilities for newly re-settled communities, Water Supply and Drainage Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said.


New Senior Assistant Secretary (PS)

Indika Karunajeewa has been appointed Senior Assistant Secretary Presidential Secretariat.

He is an Attorney-at-Law with a Master’s Degree in law of the University of Warwick, UK.

He is also Vice Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority in addition to his new position and had served as Minister Counsellor, Sri Lanka High Commission UK from 2006 to 2010. Indika Karunajeewa is an Old Boy of Royal College, Colombo.


Visakhabhinandana 2008-2009

Visakha Balika Vidyalaya Sapugaskanda has concluded a remarkable achievement with exceptional progress in many aspects. In 1991 March 25, was the remarkable year for everyone. A rice dansala organized by the residents of Mandalana will be held on Poson Poya day at Mandalana.

An exhibition and trade fair organized by Samurdhi recipients of Wennappuwa Divisional Secretariat which began on June 21 will be held until today at the Wennappuwa Educational Office ground.

Productions of the Samurdhi recipients of the area will be exhibited.

The Art festival of Tharunnyata Hetak Youth Organization will be held on June 27 at the National Youth Centre indoor auditorium from 5 a.m.


Poson Perahera

A procession of vehicles with devotees singing a Poson Bakthi Gee organized by the Regent International School, Gampaha will take place on Thursday, June 24. The Poson perahera will proceed through Miriswatte, Yakkala and Gampaha.


Annual convocation

The annual convocation of the Visual and Performing Arts University will be held at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Hall of the BMICH on June 18.
