Sri Lanka has an excellent opportunity to improve the garment
industry now with regional competitors facing various internal issues.

The garment industries in leading countries like Bangladesh are
constrained with power issues while China and India are confronted with
labour unrest, Tristar Apparel Exports Chairman Kumar Dewapura told
Daily News Business.
Due to constraints in other countries, buyers in the international
market are in favour of Sri Lanka. Therefore all companies having good
management skills, productivity and quality assurance can now cater to
the international market, he said.
Dewapura said the growth of the company is up by 40 percent after the
end of terrorism and the company has been able to reopen eight of the
factories in Kurunegala, Uva and down south which were closed down due
to the conflict.
“We have set up two new factories in Kilinochchi and Batticoloa with
an investment of US $ five million for each factory.
The two factories can provide 1000 employment opportunities. We
expect to give more job opportunities for ex-combatants of LTTE and
people of those areas in these factories,” he said.Depending on the GSP+
concession, Sri Lanka needs to cater to the international market more
aggressively with the Government’s support in the future.
It is important that the Government provide industrialists with
financial needs for equipment to succeed even without the GSP+
concession, Dewapura said. |
