Visual and Performing Arts Convocation

Nine hundred aesthetic undergraduates will be conferred with their degrees at the Visual and Performing Arts University’s third convocation ceremony, Vice Chancellor Jayasena Kottegoda said at a press conference.

Thus 344 undergraduates will receive their degrees in Dancing and Drama Faculty, 290 and 130 in Music and Visual and Art Faculties respectively. The convocation ceremony will be held under the patronage of Chancellor Pandith Amaradeva at the BMICH on June 18. Higher Education Minister S B Dissanayake and the Rabeendra Bharathi University Vice Chancellor Prof Karunasindu Dass will be chief guests.


Program on dentistry

A program on setting high standards for dental profession jointly organized by the Apollo Surgical Company and Densco Dental and Medical Company, Singapore will be held on June 18 and 19 at the Waters Edge Hotel, Battaramulla.


Public day postponed

The weekly public day held by the Inspector General of Police on Friday at the Police Headquarters will not be held on June 18 and June 25 in view of the War Heroes commemoration event to be held on June 18 and Poson Full Moon Day falling on June 25, Police Headquarters stated in a press release yesterday.


Gee Ranga Sobha

A musical evening titled Gee Ranga Sobha’ organized by Nissanka Diddeniya will be held on June 23 at 6.30 p.m. in aid to the Peradeniya University Science Alumni Association.

Proceeds from the show will be for the welfare of the Peradeniya University Science Faculty and Association activities.


Lecture on politics of diasporas

Ahilan Kadirgamar, PhD Candidate, Graduate Centre, City University of New York, will deliver a lecture on “Classes, States and the Politics of Diasporas: the Sri Lankan Experience” at the ICES auditorium, 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8 on June 17 at 5.30 p.m.

Kadirgamar is a contributing editor of Himal Southasian Magazine. His research interests include the political economy of state and society relations and the history of decolonization and the formation of the post-colonial state.


Super Flora exhibition

‘Super Flora’ a flower and foliage exhibition organized by the Western Province Horticulturists Association led by Ramya Gunatillake will be held at the Viharamahadevi Park, Colombo from June 18 to 20. A highlight will be a lecture/workshop on Sandriyana arrangement held on June 18 at 11.00 a.m. Admission for the workshop is free.


Amnesty for army deserters

A General amnesty is being given to Army deserters until June 30 to obtain legal clearance, Army Spokesperson Prasad Samarasinghe said. “From June 7 to 11, 663 have reported to the army, and among them clearance was given to 292. Soldiers who want to obtain clearance are requested to report at the Panagoda Army Headquarters and give their details,” he said. This is being carried out in parallel to War Heroes celebration week.

Chief Minister orders clearing of garbage

Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath ordered the Palmadulla Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman to remove a heap of garbage lying close to Palmadulla on the Ratnapura Ambitipitiya Road within three days. The Minister issued this order at the meeting held in chief ministers office, on June 11.

Even the Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne has expressed his dissatisfaction on this garbage dump at a discussion held in the Ratnapura district secretariat.

Upali Group to illuminate Sithulpawwa

The annual Poson illuminations of the historic Sithulpawwa Raja Maha Vivaharaya which is situated inside the Yala National Park will be held on June 24, 25 and 26. The Upali Group of Companies will do the illumination.

Token strike called off

The Joint Committee of Public Health Sector Trade Unions yesterday decided to call off the one day token strike today after they held talks with Health Minister Maithreepala Sirisena.

The Minister told the Trade Unions that he would look into their grievances and find solutions to them.

The trade unions will again meet the Minister on June 22 to discuss the issues and requested the staff to report for work, states a Health Ministry press release yesterday.
