Former minister, Speaker celebrates 89th b’day
Former Minister, Speaker and Parliamentarian M.H. Mohamed celebrates
his birthday on June 15. A born humanist M.H. Mohamed devoted his entire
life for the service of the needy and downtrodden masses. That is why a
grateful people continuously elected him to be a member of Parliament
for 45 years from 1965 to 2010.
M.H. Mohamed had been an able lieutenant of successive Prime
Ministers and Presidents including late D.S. Senanayake, Dudley
Senanayake, J.R. Jayewardene, R. Premadasa and D.B. Wijetunga. He was
once affectionately called the father of Borella.
Mohamed is also internationally well-known as a people’s leader
especially the Muslim Community. As Vice President of the World Muslim
Organization, he has promoted friendship between Sri Lanka and the
Muslim world.
He promoted education among children in distant areas such as
Batticaloa, Kinniya, Kaththankudy, Eravur, Vavuniya and Jaffna with the
help of International funding.
In 2007 was an important crossroad in his political life.
He decided to part ways with his longstanding political party - the
UNP and join hands with President Rajapaksa and the UPFA to support the
noble effort of liberating the country from cruel terrorism.
He is today happy to see his decision bearing fruit enabling people
of all communities to live in peace and unity. M.H. Mohamed’s name will
be etched in the hearts of the people of this country forever.
