Iran defends right to Nuclear Technology

UN: Iran reiterated its determination to exercise and defend its legal, inalienable rights and said it would never yield to hostile nations or pressure from other powers.

Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Mohammad Khazaee, was responding to a resolution adopted by the Security Council to implement new sanctions against Tehran for continuing its nuclear program. This new package of sanctions was approved by 12 votes in favour, two against (Brazil and Turkey) and one abstention (Lebanon) after several months of US efforts.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to exercise its inalienable right to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, said the diplomat, who said his country had been a victim of weapons of mass destruction, and that it rejected the development and use of such inhuman weapons for religious or security reasons.

He also recalled various statements made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against nuclear weapons and in favour of their eradication.

The Iranian diplomat denounced the flagrant use of a double standard within the Security Council in terms of condemning Israeli threats against Iran; attacks against the Palestinian and Lebanese people, and the attack on a humanitarian aid flotilla bound for Gaza.

He highlighted the importance of the agreement between Iran, Brazil and Turkey for the exchange of enriched uranium, as required by the Vienna group of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

What is at stake today is the credibility of the Security Council, which has become an instrument of a handfulf of countries that do not hesitate to be abusive whenever and wherever their interests are served, the Iranian representative said. United Nations, Prensa Latina
