Mangala’s case terminated

The Supreme Court yesterday terminated a rights application filed by
Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera prior to the General Election which
held on April 8.
The Court terminated the rights application after Counsel Saliya
Pieris for the petitioner informed the Court that he had not received
instructions from his client Mangala Samaraweera.
On the last occasion when the case was called before the Court, the
counsel moved for time get instructions from the petitioner.
The Bench comprised Justice Nimal Gamini Amaratunga, Justice P.A.
Ratnayake PC and Justice Chandra Ekanayake.
In his rights application petitioner Mangala Samaraweera complained
to the Court that Matara Police failed to take actions in respect of
complaints of threats and intimidations made by him prior to the
Presidential Election held on January 26.
He stated that the inaction of the Police would imminently violative
his rights during the Parliamentary Election and sought the Court to
direct the Police to take actions against the offenders.
The petitioner cited the IGP, the DIG Southern Range, HQI Matara and
OIC Kamburupitiya and the Attorney General as respondents.
Counsel Saliya Pieris appeared for the petitioner.
Senior State Counsel Riyaz Hamza appeared for the respondents.
