Priority for renewable energy sources - Minister

Priority will be given to the utilization of all renewable energy sources of the country to generate energy, said Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka at a media conference held yesterday.

“A Long-term Generation Plan will be prepared to incorporate this aspect. We also encourage active participation of the private sector to establish renewable energy power plants” the Minister noted.

Under the Smart Grid concept, all domestic consumers will be allowed to generate electricity through solar energy within household blocks of land, and feed the distribution network on “smart metering” basis. That is a prepaid card system to settle bills. This will be started from high income families and will be gradually introduced to the others.

The Ministry proposes to popularize energy efficient bulbs by providing them at concessionary prices to low- income consumers.

A customer oriented work force through human resource development will be created at area level, provincial level and regional level to provide an effective and efficient service to the consumers. All 54 areas of CEB will be assessed separately. All idle assets of CEB will be mobilized to serve the people to create additional avenues of income.
