Ruzaik FAROOK
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Art Exhibition of the Students of Saumya
Jayasekera's was held at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery recently. Under
the patronage of Vice Principal of Ladies' College Eeesha Speldewinde.
35 students from Ladies' College, Muslim Ladies' College, Musaeus
College, Lyceum International School, Nugegoda, S. Thomas' College,
Mount Lavinia, S. Thomas' Preparatory School, Colombo, The British
School in Colombo, Methodist College, Gateway International School,
A.B.C. Montessori School, Royal Institute, Asian International School
and Colombo International School exhibited a collection of about 140
paintings. They have used mostly oil pastels and Acrylic paint. Some
have done collages as well.
It is very obvious from their paintings that they love what they do
at the Art Classes. Their choice of colour and subject portray their
free spirit and spontaneity. For example, simple activities such as "off
on a holiday," "To the Laundry", "Wetting our Feet" and

their visions of fantasy such as "Singing Fish", "Sleeping Beauty's
Castle" are illustrations of colourful and uninhibited thoughts and
feelings only a child is capable of having.
All the paintings that was exhibited are for sale and it is the
desire of these little Artists to donate a part of the sale proceeds
towards a project, the beneficiaries of which would be children with
Cancer. (Last time's project, after the exhibition held in Oct/Nov.
2008, was the donation of a DVD player, DVD's, surround sound system,
clothes, books, cupboards for books, etc. to the Children's Ward at the
Cancer Hospital, Maharagama.
Here chief guest Vice Principal of Ladies' College, Colombo Eeesha
Speldewinde and Art Teacher Mrs. Saumya Jayasekara view the exhibition.
