Nepali coalition calls for dialogue with Opposition
NEPAL: Nepali coalition partners urged the main opposition Unified
Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) ( UCPN-M) to talk on resolving the
current political deadlock.
According to The Rising Nepal daily on Sunday, the meeting of
coalition party leaders on Saturday chaired by Prime Minister Madhav
Kumar Nepal asked the UCPN-M to call off all their protest programs and
create environment for consensus.
The meeting also stressed dialogue to give a meaningful conclusion to
the peace process and urged the UCPN-M to present themselves with
honesty and commitment to complete these tasks.
Stating that the people in the capital Kathmandu Valley and outside
showed a high level of civic sense by disobeying the general strike, the
meeting decided to thank all workers, students, peasants, professors,
lawyers, teachers, artistes, journalists and others for their
participation in the peace rallies.
UCPN-M suspended a nationwide indefinite general strike which has
entered its sixth day on Friday.
Talking to reporters after the UCPN-M Standing Committee meeting on
Friday night, UCPN-M Chairman Prachanda said that the party decided to
terminate the strike considering the hardship faced by general public
and that the decision had nothing to do with any external pressures.
The UCPN-M has said that it will carry on its protest against
government till May 28, the deadline for promulgating new constitution.
“Though we are calling off the general strike started on May 2, our
program of struggle has not ended yet,” Prachanda said. The UCPN-M
called the general strike, demanding resignation of Nepali Prime
Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and forming a national unity government in a
bid to speed up drafting of the new constitution.
