New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by two wickets
in the opening match of the World Twenty20 here on Friday.
New Zealand scored 139 for 8 in 19.5 overs to edge out Sri Lanka who
scored 135 for 6 in 20 overs. Sri Lanka made 135-6 off their 20 overs against New Zealand in the
opening match of the World Twenty20 here on Friday after choosing to
bat. Former skipper Mahela Jayawardene, promoted to opener, top scored
with 81 off 51 balls while Dinesh Chandimal hit a rapid 29, putting on
59 for the third wicket with Jayawardene. Sri Lanka were the runners-up
to Pakistan in the 2009 tournament staged in England. Chanaka Welegedara, the left-arm seamer, was included in the team while
New Zealand omitted pace bowler Kyle Mills and included Nathan McCullum
